Local Lifestyle - Living in Aptos

Aptos is an established community that values small, local businesses, an idea that has helped shape the town into what it is today. It does not have big box stores or industrial areas. Tourists do visit Aptos, but it is not a tourist town. Locals can trek through the forest to view all its grandeur and then spend time playing in the surf, all on the same day. There is no place quite like it.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping in Aptos

The Parish Publick House is a top-tier Irish pub, where the high ceiling and wooden beams add charm to the place. This is an exceptional spot for sandwiches and salads. While all the food is tasty, the salmon fish and chips raise the bar.

The Venus Pie Trap is a beachside bistro that mainly serves coffee, pie, and pizza. Venus Spirits teamed up with Edith’s Pie, Manresa Bread, Laundromat Bagels, and 11th-Hour Coffee to supply the restaurant with its tasty treats. There is patio seating, but many prefer to get it to go and then picnic at the beach.

Hungry diners come to The Hideout for a great meal of comfort food and cocktails. The restaurant features indoor and outdoor seating and a cozy fireplace. The juicy Hideout burger, truffle fries, and homemade potato chips are in demand.

The town center, Aptos Village, has become a new hub of activity. You will find unique restaurants and boutiques as you stroll along the sidewalks. One such place, Mentone, is housed in a multi-colored barn with bold green doors. You do not expect to find a trendy Italian eatery hiding inside. Inspired by the cuisine of the Riviera, Michelin chef David Kinch adds his spin to the dishes. People cannot stop talking about the pizzas. Mentone takes walk-ins, but seating is limited, so it is best to call ahead.

Things to Do in Aptos

Every 4th of July, locals line the street to watch the “World’s Shortest Parade.” People come out in droves, even though the parade route is only a half-mile long. The parade kicks off the activities for the day. There is live music, dancing, eating, and games for the kids. It is a miss-visit event for the whole area.

The Aptos Farmers Market is always a crowd-pleaser. Located at Cabrillo College, it is open every Saturday, rain or shine. Locals get the chance to talk with the farmers and visit with others in the community. There are 90 vendors, most of whom grow certified organic produce.

With its 30 miles of trails, Nisene Marks State Park is a great place to go hiking or bicycling. If you are new to hiking, take Waggoner Overlook, an easy trail that is wheelchair accessible and leads you to an overlook of Aptos Creek. Families enjoy the park, often having a picnic lunch and spending the day in nature.

For a different day-out experience, many locals opt for the sand and surf. There are miles of coastline to explore. People go surfing and looking for gray whales and bottlenose dolphins at Manresa State Beach. Many choose Seacliff State Beach to go camping. They also visit to fish off the pier near the famous cement ship, SS Palo Alto. Rio Del Mar State Beach is a top choice to walk your dog or enjoy a crackling evening campfire with friends on the sandy shores.
